These Things Happen is a live performance of eleven brief moments - each four to twelve seconds long - sourced from everyday observation. The project attempts to reenact the fleeting and incidental experience of these “found” bits in the gallery, using actors, sculptures, pared-down sets and synchronous soundtracks. During the performance, lighting serves to produce real-time, three-dimensional montage, sequentially illuminating the disparate bits in an additive and recuperative way. Lights turn on and off to give a glimpse, a loss, and then a different glimpse. The bits, in turn, share the same plane as the audience, surrounding and implicating viewers as actors themselves. Viewing thus becomes both performative and productive, as audience members play an essential role in defining a new, collective bit.
