Panic in the U.S. Capitol as gunfire rings out near Congress, following a car chase across central Washington.
Al Hurra TV was on the scene and caught the chase on tape.
Frank Schwing witnessed the incident.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) CAPITOL HILL SHOOTING WITNESS FRANK SCHWING SAYING:
"They stopped the sedan right at the base of the Capitol surrounded it with guns drawn --opened the passenger side of the door and were yelling at the driver. At that point the driver put the car in reverse and drove back very quickly and slammed into a cruiser, pushing it out of the way. It did a 180 and took off again. At that point I heard half a dozen gunshots. And then the Capitol Police had us and they had their guns drawn as well."
D.C. Police chief Cathy Lanier confirmed that the suspect was dead, and that there was a child in the car during the chase.
