In India, a determined tribe, aided by lawyers and NGOs, managed to convince the government to veto a huge mining project in the Nyamgiri Hills. It took the Dongria Kondh almost a decade of campaigning to protect their way of life and the forests they consider sacred. Yet British mining giant Vedanta continues to argue that its multi-billion dollar investments could help bring jobs and better living standards to one of India's poorest regions.
