Man killed by Metrolink train in Los Angeles

A man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a Metrolink commuter train in Pacoima, Los Angeles on Friday (December 6).

According to Los Angeles Times, the accident took place at about 3:50 p.m. along Van Nuys Boulevard near the intersection of San Fernando Road, between the Sun Valley and Sylmar stations. The train involved in the fatality was the 218 train. It was bound for Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

The paper quoted form a Metrolink spokesman who said it appeared that the man was trying to beat the train, even though the safety gates were down and the warning signals were going off. He was killed at the scene.The victim's identity has not been released.

It was reported that there have been about 20 fatalities involving Metrolink trains in L.A. so far this year.
