I’m not averse to a stanza;
I’m not averse to a rhyme;
I’m not averse to a rhythm
Though it’s hard to keep it in time
But to be a contemporary poet
You must ditch every archaic trick
But always, before I know it,
The habit resists every kick
And, there, I’m back again rhyming
And so my poems seem worse
But I’ll state, with exquisite timing,
I’m not averse to a verse.
