ISIS LEADER CHALLENGED OVER EXPENSIVE LOOKING WRISTWATCH
The leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has appeared in his first public address, with footage shared on Jihadi websites on Saturday. The video shows the self-anointed Caliph urging Muslims to obey him. The Iraqi authorities are currently analyzing the recording to verify its authenticity, and web users are also busy scrutinizing the content.
And they`ve spotted something rather surprising … al-Baghdadi is sporting an expensive looking wristwatch. Social networkers are trying to work out the brand the ISIS leader is boasting, and many are concluding it’s a model by a famous Swiss watchmaker. A theory shared on the online edition of British newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, which has estimated its value at several thousand euros.
A visible sign of wealth which, as blogger Nervana Mahmoud points out, runs counter to the content of al-Baghdadi`s sermon. She says the expensive accessory discredits the ISIS leader and shows he is not a true Caliph. These Twitter posts express a similar viewpoint, with web users poking fun at al-Baghdadi for wearing some “bling”, and voicing surprise that he would wear such a valuable piece whilst slamming the West.
His supporters are also confused and are wondering how he paid for such an expensive watch.
