The afterglow of a dying supernova -
A flash in slo-mo
Blasts across the southern sky
Silhouetting dark stuff
Illuminating clouds of gas and dust
A twenty year movie
from another place In spacetime
To here and now
And secrets packaged in light
Fall upon my eyes
The ancients marked these things
They made lore
And mapped the stars
And built their tombs of stone
With light straight shafts
Their spirit paths
Pointed at their god place
Not noticing the microscopic change -
That time would spoil their aim
Not that I care
That they were unaware
Does it matter?
If they came back today
Apprised of their mistake
Would they tear their hair
In anguish at their folly
Or simply say
It served its purpose
The secret still is safe
