i pulled my mask down over my face
and plunged into the pacific water.
i must have looked like mixed-up astronaut
as i sunk deeper and deeper into the dancing coral.
the underwater looked as if God had suddenly
gone crazy with a lite-brite picture just to see if He could
i reached out to touch the forbidden watery city
and set off an unspoken fish red-alert.
shots of red went to the right
and blue beams swam up like arrows,
the yellow dots dove into the seaweed
as the bubbles churned furiously.
then suddenly all was calm as i floated blinking
i turned around cautiously and saw but a lone friend.
his fins were still and his tail lay limp,
i swept up his lifeless body in my big hand.
had i done it?
