According to reports, investigators think the Irukandji jellyfish could be responsible for the death of a couple who died at a beach south of Coral Bay, Western Australia.
The Ikurandji jellyfish is only 2.5cm in diameter but its four tentacles can range from a few centimetres in length to up to a metre.
It normally inhabits the tropical waters of north Australia but appears to be slowly moving its way down the coast of Western Australia.
The Ikurandji's venom is 100 times more potent than a cobra and 1,000 times more potent than a tarantula.
A small amount of venom can cause muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Vinegar is thought to help lessen the effects of the sting, but victims frequently require hospitalization, analgesics and sometimes intravenous antihypertensive therapy.
Lycra stinger suits can be worn by swimmers as protection.
An autopsy is being carried out on the body of Kathreen Ricketson to determine if the jellyfish was responsible for her death, Perth Now reported.
