I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1972, and as a young kid I remember changing the records on my Mom’s turntable. She was always playing records – mostly Latin and Brazilian records, rhumba or salsa (she actually named me after my father and her favourite Brazilian singer, Roberto Carlos). My very first vinyl record was won at a school break dance contest (at 12 years old), a 45 of “ROCKIT” by Herbie Hancock, and later my first purchased record was the TEARS FOR FEARS album “The Hurting” (1983) and I’ve been collecting records ever since. A lot of my early collection was purchased in little record shops in places like Rexdale Mall and Sam’s on Yonge Street, and as a break dancer I got into early hip hop in a big way.
In the early 1980s, as a young kid I be the ‘chaperone’ for my two older sisters when they went to local dance and parties – being so young, I got schooled in disco, boogie and early hip hop music by the party DJs, and although I’d see these guys playing on two turntables it would be many years until I jumped into it myself. As a teenager classic house or early garage was my first love and it wasn’t long before going to local Toronto clubs like CLUB FOCUS, BOSTON GARAGE, CLUB SURF, RUMORS (Mississauga) and later 318 Richmond got the interested in playing records going.
Vinyl has always been my format. I never went digital, and I didn’t mind knowing the times were changing. Guess what? Vinyl is back. As a certified vinyl junkie, I have amassed a collection of over 16,000 records (I stopped counting after that) and am always searching for more.
