Before his hit songs Stiches and Treat You Better lifted him to the top of the charts singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes dreamt of becoming a musician like Ed Sheeran. With his sophomore album Illuminate ready for release, the 18-year-old Canadian established himself as a musician in his own right. But it was his father that urged him early on to forge his own path. “I told my dad that I wanted to be a singer and he said you can't be a singer unless you write your own songs. So I said fine, went up to my room, and wrote a song."
