"Life a User's Manual" by Georges Perec was originally published as "La Vie mode d'emploi" in 1978. The book got translated into English in 1987.
The novel gets its shape from several interwoven stories and ideas as well as literary and historical allusion that are based on the lives of the inhabitants of a fictitious Parisian apartment block, 11 Rue Simon-Crubellier.
