Newest 'Sesame Street' Muppet Has a Mom Struggling to Overcome Addiction.
Earlier this year, āSesame Streetā
introduced a new muppet, Karli, as
she moved in with her foster family.
The show has revealed the reason behind
Karliās stay with her āfor nowā family:
her mother struggles with addiction.
'Sesame Street' created the character after data showed that almost 6 million children under the age of 11 live with a parent dealing with substance abuse problems in the U.S.
The statistics also inspired a new
online initiative by āSesame Streetā
that handles parental addiction.
When you understand the impact it has on young children, and the trauma that it can cause ... you realize why it's so important that we're creating tools to help address these issues. , Sesame Workshop President of Social Impact and Philanthropy Sherrie Westin, via āTODAYā.
