The Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam has ignited a political storm, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leading the charge against the ruling. The apex court upheld the Calcutta High Court’s order canceling 25,753 teaching and non-teaching appointments made in 2016, citing widespread manipulation and fraud in the selection process. While the decision nullifies these jobs, it clarifies that employees need not refund their salaries, offering some relief to affected candidates.
Banerjee criticized the judgment, asserting that it could destabilize Bengal’s education system. “I respect the judiciary, but I can’t agree with the verdict,” she stated, emphasizing her right to dissent. She also pointed out concessions for candidates with disabilities, who may reapply under relaxed criteria. Accusing the BJP-led central government of orchestrating the legal battle, Banerjee alleged it aims to dismantle Bengal’s education system.
Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded Banerjee’s resignation, escalating tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the opposition. The ruling closes the door on reinstating dismissed employees but allows certain protections for affected individuals. With schools facing a potential staffing crisis, concerns loom over the impact on students’ education. The verdict underscores the need for transparency in public recruitments while highlighting the deepening political divide over governance in West Bengal.
