“The Silent Command” is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by J. Gordon Edwards, featuring Bela Lugosi in his American film debut. The story follows Benedict Hisston, a foreign agent involved in a conspiracy to destroy the Panama Canal and the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet. Hisston attempts to extract crucial intelligence from Captain Richard Decatur but fails. He then enlists the help of femme fatale Peg Williams to seduce Decatur and obtain the information. Decatur, however, secretly follows the "silent command" of the Chief of Naval Intelligence, pretending to be part of the conspiracy while working to thwart the saboteurs. His deception leads to his court-martial and estrangement from his wife, but ultimately, he stops the sabotage attempt, saves the canal, and is reinstated as a hero. The film was produced in cooperation with the U.S. Navy and served as a propaganda piece advocating for a stronger naval force.
