Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns over the limitations imposed by the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, stating that it prevented India from undertaking desilting operations in its dams, which in turn reduced their capacity over time.
"The Indus Water Treaty of 1960 prevented India from the desilting of the dams. This reduced the capacity of the dams. Doesn't India have the right to its waters? The treaty is in abeyance now... the cleaning of dams has started," PM Modi said.
His remarks come amid growing debates around the future of the treaty and India’s water rights, especially in the context of increasing tensions and the need for improved water management infrastructure.
