Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), June 10, 2025 (ANI): Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the Kashmir region is not only facing geopolitical instability but also a silent mental health crisis. The fallout from the military confrontation has severely impacted tourism, business, and hospitality, leaving the local population distressed. Mass cancellations of hotel bookings have emptied once-thriving tourist spots.Tour guides, transport providers, and artisans who relied on tourism are now jobless, facing financial stress and insecurity. Market activities have slowed, and revenue has declined, pushing business owners and daily wage workers to the edge. This uncertainty and loss of livelihood are driving a sharp rise in depression and anxiety. Experts, healthcare providers, and NGOs report a surge in cases of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Already burdened with an under-resourced mental healthcare system, the government has launched helpline 14416 to offer free consultations and referrals. NGOs, mental health professionals, and civil society have also mobilized to deliver counseling, outreach, and psychosocial support to affected individuals.
