Gujarat — A major tragedy struck Gujarat on Wednesday morning when the dilapidated Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River collapsed, plunging five vehicles into the swollen waters below. The incident occurred around 7:45 am near Mujpur in Padra taluka, cutting off a vital transport link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra.

According to officials, two trucks, a pickup van, and two other vehicles were crossing the decades-old bridge at the time of the collapse. Three people were rescued alive from the wreckage, while two were confirmed dead at the scene.

The Gambhira Bridge was a crucial connector for districts like Anand and Vadodara, facilitating transport and commerce to Bharuch, Ankleshwar, and Saurashtra. Its collapse has brought traffic to a standstill and exposed serious lapses in maintenance.

Local residents said they had repeatedly complained about the poor condition of the bridge and demanded urgent repairs, but their warnings were ignored.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with police, fire, and disaster response teams searching for possible survivors and retrieving vehicles from the river. Authorities are assessing the damage and working on alternate routes to restore connectivity.
