Original Birkin bag sells for record 8.6M euros in Paris auction
The original Birkin bag is sold at auction for 8.6 million euros ($10.04 million) on July 10, 2025 at Sotheby’s Paris, which the auction-house said was a record for a fashion item in Europe. The starting price was at 1 million euros ($1.17 million), and bids from the floor, from the phone and on the internet quickly went higher and higher. The buyer, who made the winning bid via telephone through a representative in the room, was a Japanese collector, Sotheby’s said. The coveted designer bag was created after Franco-British actress Jane Birkin met Hermes CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight in 1984 and told him she needed a bigger, functional bag, while travelling with her young daughter Charlotte.
