Rescue efforts underway in Congo after deadly mine collapse
Rescue operations at the Lomera artisanal gold mine in eastern Congo continued on Tuesday, July 22, after a shaft collapse over the weekend trapped an unknown number of miners underground, local miners said.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning amid heavy rain in South Kivu’s Luhihi region, has highlighted the site’s dangerous working conditions and lack of regulatory oversight.
Survivors described the structure shaking before giving way, forcing some miners to flee through alternate shafts.
