Firefighters battle expanding fronts as wildfires threaten towns in Portugal
Wildfires engulfed a forested hill in Arouca, Portugal, with flames scorching trees and thick smoke billowing into the sky as firefighting efforts continued on July 29.
The fire is opening several fronts in a mountainous and scrubland area that is difficult for firefighters to access, and slowly spreading to the town of Castelo de Paiva, 10-15 kilometers away, approaching the town of Aoruca.
More than 700 firefighters, around 250 fire trucks, and nine aircraft were fighting the flames.
