Heavy rain triggers floods, landslide in southern Japan
Japan’s meteorological agency on Aug. 8, 2025 issued a special alert for heavy rain for Kagoshima Prefecture of the southern island of Kyushu, advising residents to stay indoors, local media reported. According to national broadcaster NHK, rainfall over the past 24 hours in Kirishima city had already exceeded 500 millimeters (20 inches), and local authorities have issued evacuation warnings to residents in affected areas. In Aira city, a landslide triggered by rainfall damaged houses, while rescuers were still searching for one woman in her thirties who remained missing, local media reported.
