AOL will discontinue its dial-up internet service on September 30th, ending a technology that once defined the early online era, according to NBC News. Known for its “You’ve got mail” greeting and free trial CDs, AOL connected users through phone lines before the rise of broadband. AOL said it will discontinue its dial-up internet service and remove it from all AOL plans. The shutdown also ends AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser. AOL rebranded in 2006 and was sold with Yahoo to Apollo Global Management for $5 billion in 2021.
