A breathtaking climb turned into an even more magical experience when hikers reached the summit of South Sister, Oregon, USA, only to be greeted by a cloud of migrating butterflies.
Backpacking guide Matt Maar, 37, captured his girlfriend Maggie sitting quietly, completely surrounded by California Tortoiseshell butterflies.
The species was in the midst of its northward migration to Canada, creating an unforgettable scene high above the ground.
The clip shows hundreds of butterflies fluttering gracefully around Maggie as she soaks in the moment, a rare reward after the gruelling 5,200-foot climb.
Matt said: “We climbed 5,200’ to the summit of South Sister outside of Bend, Oregon to find ourselves in the middle of a California Tortoiseshell butterfly migration heading north to Canada.”
