Rescue efforts continue after landslide buries homes in Guinea
Rescue teams backed by bulldozers and Red Cross volunteers continued searching through debris in Guinea's capital, as the death toll from a devastating landslide rose to 16 after heavy overnight rains triggered the collapse of a hillside that buried homes in the Manéah district.
A Reuters witness observed Red Cross volunteers recovering a body from the rubble under army supervision, as grief-stricken residents looked on.
Guinea, like much of West Africa, faces increasingly severe flooding and landslides during the May-to-October rainy season. Rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage systems around Conakry have left many communities vulnerable to such disasters, with search operations expected to continue as authorities work to locate any remaining survivors and recover additional victims.
