Greater Noida – New developments have cast doubt on the version given by the family of 28-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was allegedly set ablaze for dowry in Sirsa village last Thursday.
Nikki’s sister Kanchan had claimed her husband Vipin and other in-laws poured a liquid on Nikki and set her on fire, before fleeing. Nikki’s father also alleged that except the father-in-law, all in-laws ran away after the incident.
However, a video of Nikki’s funeral shows her father-in-law and some family members of her husband attending the rites, with the father-in-law himself lighting the pyre.
Later, at 12:40 pm on Friday, an FIR was lodged naming Nikki’s husband Vipin, her brother-in-law Rohit, and her parents-in-law. All four have since been arrested. Vipin was shot in the leg during arrest after allegedly trying to snatch a policeman’s pistol.
Earlier videos had surfaced showing Vipin dragging Nikki by her hair, followed by disturbing clips of Nikki on fire and struggling with severe burns.
Kanchan also alleged that both sisters were harassed for ₹36 lakh as additional dowry. She said she was assaulted for hours the same night and fainted after witnessing her sister being set ablaze.
The case has triggered outrage, with calls for strict action against dowry-related violence.
