The recent Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 trailer is dedicated to maintaining a certain scale. Although done meticulously, it is dominated by a certain monotony. The trailer contains every expected and crucial detail: the iconic Ultramarines in massive armour, enumerable Tyranids, and the bloodthirsty rushes of both hand-to-hand and ranged combat. The audio is ear-ringing, and the visuals have the unmistakable essence of Warhammer, but somehow it lacks an element of surprise.

Tyranids have swarms that feel like an emotional and intense whirlwind due to the remnants of splendor in the rivaling mechanization. Mechanically, it is daring. Yet, outside the intense, bewildering autopilot that every gamer can slip into, the gameplay lacks variety and substance.
For longtime players, the issue isn't fidelity but innovation. The first Space Marine, released back in 2011, managed to stand out in a genre by offering a unique balance between shooting and melee combat. Now, more than a decade later, one would expect the sequel to enhance, expand, or even flip those mechanics on their head. However, the trailer seems more than happy to just amplify the scale, while keeping everything else in the formula the same.
Maybe the final verdict is one of balanced expectation. It promises (and will likely deliver) the visceral action and technical spectacle of the first part. However, placed beside the rest of the gaming world, it is almost evolution-less, and that lack of evolution is likely to be its downfall. A series that is so rich and detailed in lore must go beyond just battling the same foes.
“Polished” is the term I’d use to describe the trailer in the context of the franchise. Still, it is unclear if Space Marine 2 is willing to venture far beyond “safe” territory.
