Chronic inflammation can negatively affect all organs and tissues of the body and has been linked to gum disease and consequently linked to several other systemic diseases. This link has caused a change in the way we look at gum disease. Because of this new focus on inflammation, there has been a shift in the way periodontists view gum disease and its relationship to other disease states. When chronic inflammation is uncontrolled, it can lead to many systemic diseases, often starting with gum disease and leading to cardiovascular disease, stroke, many cancers and others; but when inflammation is constrained, the associated chronic inflammatory diseases may be repressed as well.
