A Swiss couple kidnapped by the Pakistani Taliban last July arrived by helicopter at a military airbase in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Thursday (March 15).

According to a military spokesman, the couple - identified by the Pakistani media as 29-year-old Daniela Widmer and 31-year-old Olivier David Och - said they had escaped from Taliban captivity after the two showed up at a military checkpoint in the northwest of the country.

They were kidnapped in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan and had been held by the Taliban in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border.

The couple appeared to be in good spirit and waved to cameras as they got off the military helicopter that had flown them in from the northwest city of Peshawar.

They left in a waiting vehicle, but it was not clear where they were taken from the air base.
